TOWHEES, SPARROWS, JUNCO, LONGSPURS, SNOW BUNTING

Bachman's Sparrow  Aimophila aestivalis

WINTER:  Previously Casual Visitant.  Recorded on five Huntington CBC's (total 8 birds) from 1948 to 1955.  See Remarks section.

SUMMER:  Brooks (1938) noted that nesting was documented in Cabell and Wayne Cos., WV.  See Remarks section.

MIGRATION:

 Spring:  Edeburn et al. (1960) considered a rare migrant, citing 13 March 1948 to 27 May 1958 as the range of occurrence.  The last record in our area was 21 April 1962 (Smith 1996).

 Fall:  Edeburn et al. (1960) considered a rare migrant, citing 22 August 1953 to 27 December 1953 as the range of occurrence.  The last record in our area was 12 October 1961 (WA, LK).

REMARKS:

This species became essentially absent from our area and the state of West Virginia after the 1950's (Edeburn et al. 1960, Hall 1983).  Similar declines were noted in the state of Ohio and the last record occurred in 1978 (Peterjohn 2001).
