BLACKBIRDS

Baltimore Oriole  Icterus galbula

WINTER:  Accidental.  Three records.  One in February 1953 at Point Pleasant, Mason Co., WV (Edeburn et al. 1960).  One on 29 December 1962 by Q. Martin on the Huntington CBC (Kiff et al. 1986).  One (present since 02 November 1971) on 18 December 1971 on the Huntington CBC (Kiff et al. 1986).

SUMMER:  Fairly Common Resident.  See Remarks section.

MIGRATION:

 Spring:  Fairly Common Migrant from late April to early May.  Early dates, one female (injured) collected on 21 March 1967 (RE); 13 April 1948 (Edeburn et al. 1960); 21 April 1998 (HS); 22 April 1999 (HS).

 Fall:  Uncommon to Fairly Common Migrant departing from late August to early September.  Late dates, 20 September 1951 (Edeburn et al. 1960); 09 September 1969 (HS); 06 September 1968 (HS).

REMARKS:

Singing Male Census (Koch 1971): McClintic WMA, Mason Co., WV (1967): shallow pond - cattail marsh (elevation, 183 m): 16 males/100 ha.

Breeding Bird Survey (Koch 1974): McClintic WMA, Mason Co., WV (29 May 1971): 50 Stops, 12.25 Mile. Number of Stops Recorded: 2. Total Birds: 2.

Breeding Bird Survey (Koch and Hurley 1972): Beech Fork Lake, Wayne Co., WV (May 1969): 50 Stops, 25 Mile. Number of Stops Recorded: 1. Total Birds: 1.
