WINTER: NO RECORDS.
SUMMER: Uncommon to Very Common Resident. Abundance depends on variable amount of preferred habitat available in any given year. Two hundred pairs in 1987 when construction at Byrd Locks & Dam temporarily created additional preferred habitat (WA, JF, MG). An estimated 250 pairs on 06 July 1996 at a sand/gravel pit at Gallipolis Ferry, Mason County, WV (WA) has been present through 2004. Colony present at Kyger Creek Power Plant in 2004 and 2005.
MIGRATION:
Spring: Uncommon to Fairly Common Migrant from early April to early May. Early dates, 27 March 1948 ( Edeburn et al. 1960); 03 April 1961 (WA); 07 April 2006 (WA); 08 April 1973 (HS); 10 April 2004 (WA, MG, HS); 14 April 2005 (WA, MG).
Fall: Uncommon to Common Migrant from early August to early September. Late dates, 17 September 1979 (HS); 03 September 1972 (HS); 02 September 2002 (BD, GR).
