WARBLERS

Prothonotary Warbler  Protonotaria citrea

WINTER:  NO RECORDS.

SUMMER:  Uncommon to Fairly Common Resident.

MIGRATION:

 Spring:  Uncommon Migrant from mid-April to early May.  Early dates, 14 April 2001 (WA, MF); 17 April 1965 (WA) and 2004 (WA, MG); 18 April 2002 (WA) and 2004 (HS); 19 April 2008 (MG, DP).

 Fall:  Rare migrant departing from early August to mid September (Kiff et al. 1986).

REMARKS:

Brooks (1944) considered this species virtually unknown and Edeburn et al. (1960) noted "small" numbers in our area.  First found nesting in our area on 05 May 1957 (GH, Kiff et al. 1986) and 3 pairs were present at McClintic WMA by 1960 (RK, Handley 1976, Kiff et al. 1986).

Nest Box Data:  5 nestlings banded on 25 May1964 (LK) at Ona, Cabell Co., WV (Kiff et al. 1986).  Complete clutch (4 eggs) on 22 June 1996 (first egg 17 June), hatched by 06 July 1996 and nest empty on 12 July 1996 at Green Bottom WMA (HS).
