Virginia Rail  Rallus limicola

WINTER:  Accidental.  One on 13 December 1970 at Ashton, Mason Co., WV (HS).  Handley (1976) reported this species in winter at McClintic WMA, but there are no specific dates.

SUMMER:  Rare Resident.  Nesting (adults with young) has been confirmed multiple times at Green Bottom WMA since the mid-1990's.  An adult and "immature" were found in early June 1991 at Kyger Creek Power Plant (WA, MG).  An adult with young was found on 05 July 1951 at McClintic WMA (COH) (Smith 1996).  

MIGRATION:

 Spring:  Uncommon Migrant from early April to early May.  Early dates, one on 03 April 1997 at Green Bottom WMA (HS); two on 08 April 1995 (WA, MG) and one in 2006 (WA, MG) at Green Bottom WMA; one on 14 April 2000 at Green Bottom WMA (WA); four on 19 April 1997 at Green Bottom WMA( WA, KP).

 Fall:  Rare Migrant.  Edeburn et al. (1960) indicates migrants from mid-September to early October.  Late dates, 09 October 1954 (Edeburn et al. 1960); one on 26 September 1979 at Green Bottom WMA (HS); 14 September 1955 (Edeburn et al. 1960).
