SUMMER: Common Resident. See Remarks section.
MIGRATION:
Spring: Common Migrant from early April to late April. Early dates, 26 March 2004 (MG); 27 March 2007 (SA); 28 March (JF) and 29 March (GR) 2003.
Fall: Uncommon Migrant from early September to early October. Late dates, 07 October 1970 (HS); 05 October 1970 and 1979 (HS).
REMARKS:
Brooks (1940) stated little was known about this species in West Virginia. They were noted in our area by Margolin on 01 May 1937 and 1944 by Green (Brooks 1944). None were found at the 1952 Brooks Bird Club Foray at Cabwaylingo State Forest (Hall 1952, Heimerdinger 1952). Edeburn et al. (1960) noted few records and no evidence of nesting. By the 1980's this species was a common summer resident in our area (Kiff et al. 1986).
Singing Male Census (Eddy 2003): Cabwaylingo State Forest, Wayne Co., WV (2002): Tick Ridge: dominant canopy: yellow poplar, black cherry, sugar maple (elevation, 383 m to 413 m): 41 males/100 ha.
